Why aren't we all selling our OWN advertising?

I know I wrote a post about using Project Wonderful, and sang it's praises....BUT.....I've been doing some thinking. I'm all for paying for a service that makes your business easier to run. That's money well spent. But aren't we paying them to do something we could be doing just as easily ourselves?

I've started selling my own advertising here, and it's just as easy as using PW. In fact, I think it's easier. Granted, you won't get the same analytic information, but anyone can see my hit information by clicking on my counter, and by seeing my follower count.
By selling my own ad space, I've cut out the middle man! It also allows me to interact directly with the Etsy seller buying the ad space too, which is great-I get to meet the seller, learn their name, a little about their shop, and make a new friend.
I just bought ad space on Jackie's blog, Etsy Item of the Day, and she is utilizing a payment button on her blog as well. If you want to learn how to add a buy it now PayPal button to your blog click here. And if you decide to quit paying someone else and sell your own advertising, please leave a comment with your blog link. I want to do a directory of all the blogs who sell their own ad space. I'm currently advertising on other blogs with PW, but I'm thinking I'm going to let that run out and start looking for ads direct from the blogger.
I don't know about you, but if I'm going to buy advertising, I would much rather give ALL my money to the Blog / Etsy shop owner selling it!

  4. Thank you for the mention of my blog. I think Project Wonderful isn't worth an advertiser's time - the ads are ugly and who wants to constantly bid?

  5. Hi Jackie! I agree, PW is labor intensive. I think we as designers have to remember that we are also business women and we have a bottom line to think about too!

  6. This is a great idea. I may have to figure out how to do this on my blog. PW just doesn't seem to have done anything for my shop. I'll be checking back to see how you did this and are doing with it. Thanks.

I like the idea of supporting fellow sellers and being able to look them up in the directory.

  9. Hi,

Independently of the used venue, creativity is very important in terms of advertising.
We all remember of seeing TV ads with lots of gimmicks that don't mean a thing and then we see this simple ad that makes us smile or provokes other reactions. And the next time we start seeing it, we can immediatly refer to the product or service.
Also don't forget to transmit a trustful image of your service.
    Good luck to you all.

    Best regards,

    José
